November 12- a day out in DC

2009.11.12
Weather and crappy mood be damned, I had plans yesterday in DC, so I dragged myself outta the house and made myself go. Very glad I did. It was a nice day out and I did lots of things to feed my body and my soul, which is always a good thing.

First off was one more lunch with my collge/uni friend before she leaves town. We went to my favorite Malaysian place. Here's my laksa with fish balls,...

and her chicken noodle soup. Both super delish!

Then, she let me come back to her hotel room and meet her bunny, Peanut Butter Bunny. She tours all over the country with her and is a nice fuzzy companion.

I love the way her li'l nose wiggles!

It was rainy, cold and gloomy all day- but there were still a few leaves left on the trees...

So between lunch and my evening plans, I had a couple of hours to kill. Liiiiisa suggested I head to the Corcoran to see the exhibition of Ed Burtynsky's photographs, "Oil" Fantastic! Really. If you get a chance to see this guy's work, you should. (Have a look at the video in the link to get an idea)

Then, I met the lovely Liiiisa, at Teaism for a cuppa and some snacks. We shared the above veggie bento box, and...

This shortbread sampler that included macha shortbread. Soo good!

While on the metro to our destination, we met this pretty service dog, Lucky.

Such a face!

The Rossyln escalator up from the metro is really, really steep. (annotated)

Here's where we went!! A TTWT Photoblogger's dream :-) Nothing but food p*rn. ;-). My friend Marty posted it as an event on Facebook, since I was planning lunch down there anyway, I thought to stay down and make a day of it. Happily, Liiiiis blew off work and schoolwork for a few hours to hang out with me. :-)

Since it was at an art school- we missed most of the food but- what they did is serve a few choice tidbits, that had photographs at the front of the exhibit, and they included recipes...
Above is the only thing that only Liiiis got to try (like I said, everything was gone), "Deconstructed Caprese".

Here's the recipe... I guess that one is sort of "molecular gastronomy" for beginners...

Here's the pic I took. The little balls- the large red one contains the tomato, and the little green ones the basil.

Lotsa pictures of food!!

Really sorry I missed this one- they were tiny little cupcakes I think..

I may hafta make this at some point.

Marty had two photos in the exhibition (of mostly professional photographers). Here's his Maryland-centric one of crabs.
Here's his website.

All those food pictures made us hungry for more snacks, so off to Oyamel. I got a ponche to drink.

When you order guacamole, they make it fresh right in front of you.

mmmm, realllyyy gooood!

papas fritas al mole: "fried potatoes in a mole poblano sauce of almonds, chile and a touch of chocolate, topped with Mexican cream and aged cotija cheese "

Then it was back to the metro, then home... first we passed this t shirt shop, where Obamamania and Obamerchandise were still going strong. How about an Obama onesie?

Fun day out, despite the weather and despite my bleak mood when I left my house. It's amazing what some good eats, some good chatting and company, some nice animals, and some art and culture will cure.
